Battlestar Galactica debuted in 2003 as a four hour miniseries for the SciFi Channel and was a "re-imagining" by David Eick and Ronald D. Moore of the Original Battlestar Galactica television series from 1978 created by Glen A. Larson.
The show began with the destruction of the Twelve Colonies of Kobol, and followed the battlestar Galactica as it found itself leading a refugee fleet away from the destroyed colonies and on a quest for Earth with the survivors of a race of humanity, which numbered under fifty thousand.
The series began as a four hour miniseries in December 2003 on the Sci Fi network and was a rating success in Europe, Australia and the United States, unlike the Original Series, the new series ran for four successful seasons, ending its run on March 20, 2009. Battlestar Galactica received many awards and nominations including a Peabody Award, a Saturn Award, a Hugo Award, the Television Critics Association's Program of the Year Award, as well as Emmy nominations for its writing and directing.
The series featured Emmy Award-winning and Academy Award-nominated Edward James Olmos as the Commander, William Adama, and Academy Award-nominated Mary McDonnell as President Laura Roslin.
Battlestar Galactica spawned the live-action spin-off TV series Caprica set to be released in Junuary 2010.
